One of the best things I did (not sure if this can be done with a Mac mouse, but if you have a PC mouse...)
In the MOUSE settings, set it to this:
Ctrl + Button3 = Switch between preview (source clip) and sequence
Shift + Button3 = Color correction mode
Alt + Button3 = Effect editor mode
Button3 (by itself) = source/record mode (leaves whatever mode you were in aka back to normal)
It is so fast dude.

Wurd! I hope you get the hang of the paint effect, it's super powerful for what it is and can be used in MANY different ways.

Shift+A to toggle it on and off. ALT click and drag to the right lets you select clips, while ALT click and drag to the left lets you select edit points which automatically lets you enter trim mode.
